Rhododendron 'Rangitoto Rose' (Vireya)

Comments: Habit: Grows slowly to 2m or more.
Foliage: Leaves are thick and leathery with brown scaled hair layer when young.
Flowers: Huge waxy tubular funnels in flat umbel of 6-8, deep pink in bud opening pink with a strong carnation scent.
History: Bred by Os Blumhardt in 1983 but not registered. Sister seedlings include 'Rio Rita' and 'Big Softy'.
