Rhododendron 'Java Light' (Vireya)

Rhododendron 'Java Light' (Vireya)
.
Family: Ericaceae (Heath)
Life form: Shrub - evergreen
Comments: Habit: Compact medium shrub to 2m x 2m.

Foliage: Ovate leaves, 120 x 55 mm, glossy and scaly.

Flowers: Vivid flame orange funnel shaped flowers, 10-12 per umbel, repeat flowering. Very free flowering shrub but has tendancy to have bud scales that stick together and not release the flowers properly, sitting as a cap on the expanding buds. This seems seasonal in effect.

History: R. laetum X R. javanicum. Cross by Don Stanton, Victoria, Australia, and seed raised by Ewen Perrott, New Zealand. Plant named by Graham Smith in 1984.

Further information: Available from New Zealand vireya nurseries.
